Job Description:
Does opening a box of recently delivered books bring you indescribable joy? Do friends and family turn to you when trying to remember a book title or author? Do you live to connect someone with their individualized, perfect next read?
A Sanctuary Cafe’s micro-bookstore has a unique twist: every book we carry has been read and reviewed by a member of our staff! If talking books and hand selling is your favorite part of being a bookseller, this may be the perfect job for you. In addition to carrying exciting new releases, A Sanctuary Cafe will also feature beloved favorites (backlist), local interest, and yes, a permanent section of books about cats.
Requirements (please do not apply if you do not meet ALL of these):
Love books and are an avid reader
Experience working as a bookseller, including:
proficiency with daily bookstore tasks including receiving and shelving new books and processing sales
writing staff recommendations (“shelf talkers”)
helping customers find their next read
Ability to work weekends (A Sanctuary Cafe will be open Wednesday through Sunday and closed Monday & Tuesday)
Ability to maneuver 20 pound boxes of books
Ability to work onsite (this position has very little remote work)
Responsibilities:
While not responsible for the initial round of hiring, lead ongoing training and any additional rounds of hiring
Assigning daily tasks and special projects to booksellers
Helping customers with problems or concerns that can’t be handled by booksellers
Creating weekly and monthly schedules
Filling in at bookstore counter for call-outs, scheduling gaps, etc.
Preferred Experience:
Participated in training/onboarding new staff
Have lived in the greater Boston area for at least 3 years (hiring local is one of our core values)

Salary: Starting at $60,000
