Frequently Asked Questions: Cats

  • The owner, Brittany Baker, is personally adopting each cat and on top of her multiple hours a day with them, caregivers are full-time, long-term staff who will develop deep bonds with each cat.

Cats will spend an average of 12 hours a day with awake, attentive humans (more than the vast majority of traditional households, who even if working from home, are not able to give cats their full attention during working—and sleeping—hours).

Cats will also benefit from bonus relationships with the people who become "regulars" at the cafe!

    • a large catio space that features a real tree, many perches, bird-watching and people-watching opportunities, and lots of sunshine!

    • vertical catification everywhere that allows them to climb, perch and observe (or nap)—this means they will only interact with humans on their own terms

    • rotating enrichment and training sessions will provide fun cognitive challenges

    • one home for the rest of their lives (the lease is 20 years)

  • - indoor only (they would need to sneak through four doors to get to the sidewalk!)

    - pet insurance and monthly visits from our mobile vet, who will focus on giving a physical to one cat at each visit but also check in about all of the others

    - visitors will sign a waiver and be supervised by staff and our extensive system of security cameras (in most businesses, "the customer is always right", but for us, it will be "the cat is always right")

    - clockwork schedule of feeding, with amounts/types of food individually adjusted to best meet the needs of each cat

    - daily observation logs to note inappetance, digestive upset or any change in behavior that might suggest an underlying issue

    - litter boxes in a private, no-visitors area that are scooped throughout the day

    - no toxic plants, exposed cords or accessible ductwork they can get lost in

  • A Sanctuary Cafe would not be a good placement for cats who are:

    - looking for a quiet household

    - need to be an only cat or are "cat selective"

    - have a dietary restriction/medical condition that could put them in danger if they're given human food (strictly against the rules of the cat cafe, but I'm sure we'll catch people trying)

  • A Sanctuary Cafe will be an exciting new option for cat-starved individuals who aren't currently in a position to adopt. In addition to allowing the public to interact with cats in our cat lounge area, our large front window allows anyone to view our cats whether we are open or closed. Our completely separate cafe/bookstore side of the cafe, which includes a separate HVAC system, also allows people without a cat lounge reservation (or a severe allergy to cats) to observe them through our extensive window walls for free whenever we are open.
